Sunflowers, also known as Helianthus annuus, are native to the Americas. In 1597, botanist John Gerard, determined that sunflowers always face east. The sunflowers I photographed today are across the street from the Royal Farms Store at 3209 Jarrettsville Pike, Monkton, MD. Although, you should walk up the road a bit, the ones directly across from Royal Farms are in their last stages. If you have the chance this weekend, GO!! They are at their peak now. Clear Meadow Farms plants the fields every 2 years, I believe. So you won't get another chance until 2014.
There were so many, you couldn't see the end of the fields. I'm sure there were even more up the road, but the heat got to me. So many butterflies visiting the flowers, I saw Eastern Tiger Swallow tails, yellow and black; monarchs; sleepy orange sulphur; painted lady; and, others.
There were a couple of cute little girls in the field, I couldn't resist taking their photo!
