Built to be a jail like no other the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, PA, opened in 1829. Their philosophy was "confinement in solitude with labor." Many jails have been based on the same design, a center with spokes radiating out, like a wheel. Closed in 1971, the prison is now in a state of decay, but is interesting, nonetheless.
